For most of the 20th century, St. Louis’s Central West Complete was a hub of LGBTQIA+ community life and political protest. This tour, led by the Missouri Historical Society, will investigate some of the places that were instrumental in shaping the neighborhood’s fascinating history, including the locations of fabulous nightclubs and progressive churches, the home of the region’s first gay collective center, and the starting indicate of St. Louis’s first Identity march. Along the way we’ll explain how St. Louis’s LGBTQIA+ citizens have been a part of the growth, decline, and renewal of neighborhoods throughout the city. St. Louis is a town known for many things. It’s the home of the St. Louis Cardinals, Budweiser Brewing Organization, the famous Gateway Arch, and gooey butter cake, among other things. A Look at St. Louis History

The modern-day history of St. Louis began in 1764 when French settlers established a fur-trading display in the area. Construction of a village began the following year, and the village was named St. Louis, after King Louis IX of France. As a product of the Louisiana Purchase of 1803, St. Louis officially became part of the United States. Shortly thereafter, St. Louis gained fame as the signal from which Lewis and Clark embarked on their exploration of the newly acquired Louisiana Purchase territories. It was officially incorporated as a city in 1832 and grew steadily as a center of commerce and trade from that point on.
