Chippendales dancers dish on cosmology, carbs and more

From “The Entire Monty” to “Magic Mike” and, of course, the epic 1990 SNL sketch featuring a stripping Patrick Swayze and the slightly less svelte Chris Farley, the role of male stripper in pop culture has long been purely comedic. But the men of Chippendales are no joke. The Las Vegas-based striptease troupe has been at it since 1979, and will hit Indy on tour later this month — in their bowties and shirt cuffs, naturally. We caught up with three star dancers to talk families, fitness and what the world gets untrue about male stripping.

How did you fall into this line of work?

I didn't collapse, I chose. I've been a actor for 10 years now. I was trained in musical theatre. Chippendales was a fantastic professional opportunity for me.

Can you amble us through the average day of a Chippendales guy while on tour?

Wake up, nibble breakfast, travel to the next town, eat lunch, labor out, travel to the venue, feast dinner, perform the show, mingle with fans at the after party, then go to bed.

Guest author Ryan Topping gives us another perspective on a topical subject…

I’ve had a couple of guest authors since the inception of this site, but this is the first time that someone has written a companion piece to one of my originals. It’s important to remark that Mr. Topping is a few generations removed from my own. He’s become an grown-up in a world where marriage equality and LGBTQ rights are mostly established (despite the current political regime’s attempt to undo them). Growing up in a more progressive culture undoubtedly impacts your point of view. But that doesn’t mean you’re unaware to what’s come before…and what challenges still remain.

You may recall that a little over a year ago, Sam published this article in which he ranked Vegas male revues from a gay p.o.v. I discovered that article while doing research for my 21st birthday, trying to determine if there were any shows in which I could expect to receive attention. Reading his article was the commencing of a series of events that lead to us actually meeting in person.

Sam’s article was fantastic (and in my opinion will always be his most useful), but I

“Welcome to Chippendales” tells a success story gone wrong

“Welcome to Chippendales” is the juicy, entertaining true-crime story of how Somen “Steve” Banerjee opened and operated the world-famous male strip club for ladies — and how it all went south. This 8-episode limited series on HULU begins November 22 with the first two episodes,. New episodes will be dropping weekly through January 3.

The show recounts how Somen (Kumail Nanjiani) went from managing a gas station to renaming himself “Steve” and opening a nightclub in Los Angeles. Steve’s first project is a backgammon club that failed to draw customers. However, after self-proclaimed club promoter Paul Snider (Dan Stevens) and his girlfriend Dorothy Stratten (Nicola Peltz Beckham) step in, Steve asks for their support. Although various gimmicks from mudwrestling to an oyster-eating rivalry fail to lure customers, when the trio go out to a homosexual club, Steve gets the idea to turn the room into a male strip club for women.

Finding a bunch of guys willing to take their clothes off is not a large challenge, nor is finding women to pay to view them. The club, renamed Chippendales — after the cabinet maker, to provide it cl

Jaymes Vaughan has lead an interesting life. He has circled the globe on Amazing Race and as host of the Chippendales World Tour. He is first openly gay member of this sexy stage show. The Chippendales are taking over Tulalip Resort and Casino tonight. The show is completely sold out but Jaymes gave us some time in his busy schedule.

Earle Dutton: You have been interviewing a lot of celebrities lately, like Joan Collins and Robin Leach. Who was your favorite so far?
Jaymes Vaughan: I hate to just grab one because it compassionate of makes me come across like a jerk but Susan Lucci was astounding. The timing of that interview was awesome. I interviewed her the week that my episode of The Young & The Restless was on the air. It was so cool to interview the Queen of Soap Operas the week of my soap opera debut. I got her input and her advice on how to make a career out of it. She was just so chilly to do the interview in the first place but to also get time out of the interview to speak about me and my career. She is a very cool lady. She taught me how to slap and everything.
