Jon Stewart’s Episode of “The Problem With Jon Stewart”

If you somehow missed it, this week Jon Stewart released one of the most powerful defenses of transgender rights a cisgender ally has ever put forward. It began with a comedic monologue reminiscent of his old school Daily Show content, in which he smash back against things like biological reductivism and Matt Walsh’s “What Is A Woman” question - at times using things like the Bible and ancient English law to contradict the concept that gender is a simple notion. He moved forward to an interview with a panel of the parents of trans kids as well as transgender rights lawyer Chase Strangio. It is the conclusion that is catching the most attention, however.

Jon Stewart delivered a brutal takedown of one of the most anti-trans attorneys general in the United States, AG Leslie Rutledge, in an astonishing interview. Arkansas was one of the first states (and remains one of the only states) to pass a law medically detransitioning all transgender teenagers in the declare - that rule is currently stayed in court and being argued before the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals in Brandt v Rutledge.

Jon Stewart on Gay Marriage Bashers: “I Am So Tired of This”

Jon Stewart had a field day with Republican reactions to the Supreme Court’s ruling legalizing gay marriage across the country.

He played a clip of pundits asking if gay marriage was a slippery slope. What would stop three adults from marrying each other?

“I knew even when I was 5, I was different. While the other boys played with trucks and army men, I was figuring out bed-sharing schedules,” Stewart joked.

Others asked if florists who refused to cater to gay weddings would be put out of business or shut down for discrimination. Stewart responded with a photoshopped image of Archie Bunker as a florist.

“I am so tired of this old trope, this old stereotype about anti-gay florists,” Stewart said. “That’s all we ever hear about is anti-gay florists.”

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and others talked about how letting the Supreme Court decide such an issue was not what the founding fathers envisioned.

“Then why did they lay that article in the Constitution?” Stewart asked.

Nine days ago, I was on MSNBC discussing a bill that would acquire created special rights for workers in Kansas to discriminate against people on the basis of sexual orientation, even in violation of an employer's policies. I used this example:

If you work for a company and that business has a policy against anti-gay discrimination, you're allowed to say, 'Well, I'm the bakery guy at the national chain supermarket, but I'm not going to make a cake for this gay couple's wedding.'

Last week, Jon Stewart poked fun at me, saying:

Let me stop you right there. You thing a gay wedding is go

The season two premiere of The Obstacle with Jon Stewart (watch free here) is an insightful and pointed interrogation of political opportunists and right-wing extremists attempting to prohibit lifesaving healthcare for trans youth.

“Wow. That’s an incredibly made-up figure,” Stewart tells the Arkansas Attorney General Leslie Rutledge after she spouts false data and struggles to respond to questions about her work to ban gender-affirming look after for youth. While the Attorney General had trouble backing up any of her claims, Stewart stated the facts.

Here are some of the real proof about gender-affirming look after, cited by Stewart on air:

  • TRUE. The American Medical Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Endocrine Society, the American Psychiatric Association all recommend a clear, science-based place of guidelines for youth that are accessing gender-affirming nurture. In fact, all major medical associations support lifesaving gender-affirming care for all transgender and nonbinary people.
  • TRUE. In the five years preceding the ban on gender-affirming care for trans youth, there were no cases of Arkansas youth having received transition-related surgeries. These types of medical
