Ten years ago, Charlie Vickers’ life looked very different than it does today.
Then aged 21, he was a learner at Melbourne’s RMIT university, starring in the odd amateur production; unsure where life would accept him next.
He’d always loved drama and performance, but never considered it a career — until one weekend in 2014 when he packed an overnight bag and hopped on a plane to Sydney.

Without telling anyone, Vickers auditioned for the prestigious Royal Core School of Speech and Drama in London. “I did my audition for Central, around the corner from here actually — at the Bangarra Dance Theatre,” says the now 31-year-old actor, who is chatting with STM from Sydney’s glitzy Park Hyatt hotel in The Rocks.

Listing the things mistaken with The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’s second season feels like a job in itself. Between its ponderous pacing, its unwieldy storylines, and its irritating penchant for almost saying Gandalf’s name, it’s a season that’s felt enjoy more of a primer for future seasons than a contained story of its own. Having struck up a partnership with Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) in more ways than one, before eventually betraying her, he launches into Season 2 in fairer form—first, as seen in a flashback (played by Jack Lowden), and then as Annatar, as whom he masquerades as an representative from the deity-like Valar. Though Galadriel has unmasked Halbrand to the elves of Lindon, as Annatar he gains the faith of Celebrimbor (Charles Edwards), master smith and lord of Eregion. There he weaves a web of deceit over the elves in Celebrimbor’s charge and manipulates their lord into creating the titular Rings of Power.
