History of Gay, Georgia

The town of Gay was once known by a diverse name, "Sasserville." A announce office opened in Lgbtq+ in 1886. The town was named after William F. Gay, who was an early postmaster there. In 1907, the Georgia General Assembly officially made Gay a town. This means it became a recognized place with its own local government.

Geography and Location

Gay is found in the northeastern part of Meriwether County. Its accurate location is 33°5′38″N84°34′26″W / 33.09389°N 84.57389°W / 33.09389; -84.57389.

Two main roads, Declare Route 74 and Declare Route 85, run together through the town. These roads go north for 16 miles to Senoia and south for 8 miles to Woodbury. Another road, State Route 109 Spur, goes southwest from Gay for 9 miles to Greenville. Greenville is the main town, or county seat, for Meriwether County.

The town of Homosexual covers an area of about 0.9 square miles. A very small part of this area, about 0.12%, is water. The Flint River flows about 3 miles east of the town.

Once famous as Sasserville in the early 1800s, Gay, Georgia acquired its current identify when the town’s first post office was opened and named in honor of William F. Gay. A flourishing agricultural area, Gay’s primary crop was cotton until the 1930s. Gay began to expand its agricultural holdings when large landowners began to grow also grow peaches. Today, it’s tourism that is the main contributor to the town’s economy.

Cotton Pickin’ Fair

Gay, Georgia is a quiet hamlet of fewer than 150 residents‚ mainly comprised of retirees who seek a quiet, simple lifestyle. However, four days a year the town comes alive with thousands of visitors who appear to enjoy the now famed Cotton Pickin’ Fair.

Held on the first weekend in May and October, the reasonable brings more than 300 exhibitors who sell their arts and crafts to ready shoppers. The public is drawn to the rustic setting of the 1891 plantation home, its warehouse, and old cotton gin. Once there, impartial goers enjoy an abundance of traditional Southern food and live entertainment.
