Buster Crabbe is the only player to play Tarzan, Flash Gordon, and Buck Rogers – the top three syndicated comic strip heroes of the 1930s.

Before going into acting, Crabbe competed in two Olympic Games as a swimmer. In 1928 he won the bronze medal for the 1,500 meters freestyle, and in 1932 he won the gold medal for the 400 meters freestyle.

He attended the University of Southern California, where he was the school’s first All-American swimmer (1931) and a 1931 NCAA freestyle titlist.

Crabbe portrayed Western folk hero, Billy the Kid, in 36 films, starred in the television series, Captain Gallant of the Foreign Legion.

He appeared in the 1982 feature film, The Comeback Trail, one year before his death.

In 1931, MGM was auditioning musclemen with exceptional swimming ability for a new movie about Tarzan, the Edgar Rice Burroughs pulp hero.  It would be a big deal, the first Tarzan talkie, with real location shots.

Two Olympic gold medalists auditioned: 23-year old Buster Crabbeand 27 year old Johnny Weissmuller.  Weissmuller won, and starred in Tarzan the Ape Man (1932), one of the top box office draws of the year.

Apparently being muscular and bulgeworthy was not a consideration.




Undaunted, Buster was cast as the Tarzan clone Kaspa the Lion Man in King of the Jungle (1933).

And Tarzan the Fearless (1933), which sank appreciate a stone and was rapidly forgotten.

Johnny continued his juggernaut in Tarzan and his Mate (1934), Tarzan Escapes (1936), and Tarzan Finds a Son! (1939), 12 movies in all, becoming the iconic Tarzan for generations of moviegoers, finally retiring to become Jungle Jim in 1948.  Watch his Cannibal Attack (1954)  for some major gay subtexts.

He doesn't acquire a lot of gay rumors, though some people suggested that when his movie son, Johnny Sheffield, grew up, they became an item.

Buster Crabbe- American Olympian swimmer and thespian

Buster Crabbe was born in 1908 in Oakland, California, but grew up in Hawaii when his family moved. He attended the University of Southern California where he was the schools first All-American swimmer and was a part of the Sigma Chi fraternity. He graduated in 1931.

He won the bronze medal at the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam and won the gold medal at the 1932 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. In 1933 he started an acting career. He was credited as Larry Crabbe in some films. He also did television and in 1952 he covered sports for a network in NYC on Sunday nights.

In the 1950s-1960s his acting career became thirsty with no bids leading him to become a stockbroker and businessman. During this time he did a limited low budget western films and some commercials.

He got married in 1933 and had two daughters, one who died in 1957 at age 20.

He died in 1983 while at home in Scottsdale, Arizona from a massive heart attack. He was 75 years old.
