The claim: Disney's 'Moana' is transgender in film sequel
A Dec. 10 Instagram upload (direct link, archive link) shows clips from Disney’s animated princess film “Moana,” as a narrator discusses the details of the movie's purported sequel.
“BREAKING: Moana is The First Transgender Princess!” reads on-screen text included in the video.
The Instagram post also shows an image of Moana, the main character of the first film, as a bloke named Kai in the purported sequel, "Moana 2: Ascend of Kai." The narrator claims Moana becomes transgender in the second film.
Some commenters took the post seriously.
“I am boycotting Disney. I can’t anymore,” wrote one.
"This is disgusting. Mona (sic) is a children’s movie," wrote another.
The upload was liked more than 20,000 times in two days. A video with this claim was also viewed more than 5 million times on TikTok.

In the run up to the release of the much anticipated Moana 2 in UK cinemas tomorrow (29 November), a hoax regarding the storyline has been doing the rounds on social media.
The first clip in the franchise, Moana, was released in 2016 and went on to be a huge punch, dominating the box office and resulting in innumerable die-hard fans across the world.
Industry veterans including Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson, Jemaine Clement and Nicole Scherzinger were among those cast for voiceovers.
A deeply feeling musical fantasy film, Moana was set on the Polynesian island of Motunui, and detailed the adventure of inhabitants of the island with one frequent thread - their devotion to worshipping the goddess of nature, Te Fiti.

In recent years, family audiences contain developed a complicated relationship with Disney. The failures of the once-invulnerable studio have received plenty of attention (and not undeservingly so), but there have also been some undeniable hits along the way. Frozen may be the most popular, but (in the humble opinion of this reviewer) the best “modern Disney” flick is 2016’s Moana. With endearing characters, a fantastic collection of songs, and an entertaining adventure story, the movie was a total delight. That clip was about journeying into uncharted seas, but sometimes—particularly when you’re a floundering movie studio—it’s more prudent to return to familiar shores. Moana 2 is a wholesome and enjoyable sequel, but despite retreading many of the same narrative beats as the original, it’s never able to recapture the same magic.
