If you’ve been paying attention to the Jewish comedy room over the last few years, you know the mention Alex Edelman. Edelman has established himself as the chief rabbi of comedy through his solo show and HBO special “Just For Us,” a thoughtful examination of what it means to be a contemporary American Jew. (Though we at Hey Alma would enjoy to point out that we possess been fans of Edelman since “Saturday Night Seder.”)

So, here are 18 things to know about him.

1. Alex was born on March 20, 1989 in Boston to a Jewish family.

2. He’s a Pisces!

‘Just for Us’ Comedian Alex Edelman Talks HBO Unique, White Nationalists and Why His Sexuality Journey Could Be Concentrate of Future Show

It’s an early Friday morning in May and comedian Alex Edelman is on a Zoom video call from a Los Angeles hotel. He has a bit of a bed top and says that he had to borrow the socks he is wearing, a detail he shares when I tell him I’m nervous about our interview because he’s a really “smart comic.”

“That is so friendly but.. I’m not a intelligent comic. I had that realization today when I figured all the stuff that I forgot to pack for my trip to Los Angeles,” Edelman says. “I forgot dress shoes, a belt. I forgot to pack socks.”

Edelman traveled from his New York City area home for the premiere of Jerry Seinfeld’s Pop Tarts film, “Unfrosted.” He makes an appearance in the film as the Apple Head character.

“Jerry called out the cast’s name yesterday. We all stood up and to have Jerry Seinfeld even say your name, goodness me,” Edelman says. “When I was a kid, I used to sneak downstairs after my parents had gone to sleep and my brother

A rabbi walks into a bar. You don’t demand to know much about comedy to recognize that sentence, or a variation thereof, as a classic setup to a joke. But what happens when the setup or, perhaps more accurately, the inciting incident, has much higher stakes? Like, for example: A Jew walks into a meeting of ivory nationalists.

Though “Just For Us” might be his most thoughtful meditation on American Jewish persona yet, it’s not Alex’s first solo show. In 2014 Alex performed his show “Millennial” at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, winning an Edinburgh Comedy Award for Best Newcomer. The following year he did his second solo demonstrate , “Everything Handed to You,” at Edinburgh, selling out the entire run. Since then, Alex has been touring his solo shows and writing on television shows like “The Wonderful Indoors” and “Teenage Bounty Hunters.”

If you’re thinking that’s quite a bit of success for a relatively young comic, you’re absolutely correct — especially for someone who comes from an atypical backgr
