As someone who grew up in Florida, I never got to experience Philly’s “down the shore” identity, but after living here for the past seven years, I thought it was time to life it. My partner Kyle and I spent this past weekend at the Ocean Casino Resort in Atlantic City to mark his birthday and our relationship.
We drove down, which took about an hour and a half. The drive was smooth, and as we traveled, Kyle shared childhood memories of spending time at the shore. He lovingly corrected me each time I said “at the shore,” emphasizing the local vernacular: “down the shore.”
Kyle is from Langhorne, and prefer many suburban families, they spent their summer weekends at the beach. Growing up in Florida, the beach was always at my fingertips, so I never thought of a weekend “down the shore” as something special. This trip was an eye-opener.
Upon arrival at the world-famous Atlantic City Boardwalk, we checked into the VIP area of Ocean Casino Resort, adjacent to the impressive 6,000-gallon saltwater aquarium in the hotel lobby.
