Cary Grant’s Daughter Finally Reveals if He Was Gay or Not

Cary Grant’s only daughter, Jennifer Grant, whose mom is actress Dyan Cannon, finally wants to put the rumors to rest. For decades, fans contain speculated about Grant’s sexuality, with some believing that he was gay after being married five times and only having one kid at the age of 62. Grant, whose real entitle was Archibald ‘Archie’ Leach, lived with his co-star Randolph Scott in Malibu for 12 years after working together on the 1932 film Hot Saturday, which only fueled the rumors.

She said, “I suppose the [misconception about my father] that comes to mind is the question of, ‘Was he straight? Was he gay?’ When I wrote my book [in 2011], I got hate mail saying, ‘Why aren’t you standing up for the fact that your father was homosexual?’ But the truth of the matter is, I never saw anything to indicate that. And had he been homosexual, I absolutely would’ve stood up for it. He had queer friends and there’s just absolutely nothing to be ashamed of there. But I had to speak the fact, which was I saw a very straight male who watched women, was married to women, had

From Scott Eyman’s “Cary Grant: A Brilliant Disguise” (Simon & Schuster, 10.20), as excerpted in The Daily Beast:

“[Writer] Bill Royce and Grant even had a conversation about sex. After Royce unburdened himself about his affairs with both men and women, Grant responded by implying he had been basically gay as a young man, later bisexual, still later straight.

[Randolph] Scott, he said, had seen their relationship as ‘locker-room playing around.’ It had nothing to do with how a man should lead his life. Besides that, at one point Darryl Zanuck had taken Randy aside and told him that enough was enough.

“Grant explained sexuality in terms of recital, of acting. He told Royce that to not completely scout one’s sexuality would be fond an actor playing only one character for life. Everybody, he said, had more than one character inside them. He didn’t think homosexual acts were anything to be ashamed of, or, for that matter, proud of. They simply were part of the journey, not necessarily the final destination.

“I think Cary saw the searching I was doing and trusted me. He had been influenced by the Kinsey report

A book written by Cary's daughter,"Good Stuff"

Hers was a Hollywood fairy-tale universe few, if anybody, can live: being the youngster of arguably the most famous movie star in the world – and, certainly, the most dapper, elegant and charming. His name was Cary Grant.

"Okay, I had a devotion on Dad. Okay, more than a little infatuation on Dad," Jennifer Grant, 45, writes in her warm memoir, Good Stuff: A Reminiscence of My Father, Cary Grant, which Alfred A. Knopf is publishing May 3. "My other real crushes were Donny Osmond and Jean-Paul Belmondo."

But it was Cary Grant who picked up young Jennifer at educational facility, who read to her, taught her life lessons and saved every photo, souvenir and scrap of paper that the two of them shared for the 20 years he was in her being. He died, at 82, in 1986.

Those mementos and Jennifer's memories of them form the crux of her book, which is dedicated to her mother, the actress Dyan Cannon. (Cannon and Grant, who was married five times and divorced four, were wed from 1965 to 1969.)

Was Cary Grant gay.

I saw a program on Grant yesterday. It said he and Randolph Scott distributed a place for years. Yet he was married 5 times. Had one kid with Dyan Cannon when he was very senior. I gave no thought about it until the program made hints. Now I am curious fellow.

Given that Grant never said so, any answer is going to be speculation. The rumor has always been that he and Randolph Scott were lovers and that the relationship picked up and dropped off in between Grant’s relationship with women. There are some semi-homoerotic publicity pictures of Grant and Scott around a pool that fueled the rumors. The rumor was well enough recognizable that Chevy Hunt in the I wanna say slow 1970s called Grant a “homo” on TV and Grant sued him for defamation.

And Grant won, in the feeling that Chase settled out of court.

I can’t find it now, but I seem to recollect hearing–maybe in one of those interviews with old stars on TCM?–that the boys’ bungalow had a cute nickname among
